Donald Trump, despite being barred from a formal closing argument, seized an opportunity to speak during his New York civil fraud trial, leading to a six-minute diatribe before being cut off by the judge.
Trump protested his innocence and accused persecution, defying the judge’s rules.
“We have a situation where I am an innocent man,” Trump protested. “I’m being persecuted by someone running for office and I think you have to go outside the bounds.”
“This is a fraud on me. What’s happened here, sir, is a fraud on me,” Trump said as the judge seemingly refused to listen. “I know this is boring to you.”
“Control your client,” Engoron told Trump’s attorney.
The trial revolves around allegations of exaggerated wealth on financial statements, with the New York Attorney General seeking $370 million in penalties.
The day was marked by tension, including a bomb threat at the judge’s house.
Trump’s in-court remarks ensured a tumultuous final day, with his lawyers claiming he did nothing wrong and characterizing the case as a manufactured claim for a political agenda.
