Former President Donald Trump submitted election paperwork in Illinois without signing the “loyalty pledge,” a relic from the Red Scare era.
This omission comes as Trump faces legal challenges over his attempts to overturn the 2020 election results.
Efforts to prevent his name from appearing on primary ballots have emerged in several states, including Illinois.
The loyalty pledge, dating back to the 1950s, has faced attempts for removal, and while it is optional, it has become customary for presidential hopefuls.
The Illinois Oath requires candidates to agree not to “directly or indirectly teach or advocate the overthrow of the government of the United States or of this State or any unlawful change in the form of the governments thereof by force or any unlawful means.”
Trump’s failure to sign the pledge has raised concerns, as it affirms the candidate’s stance against advocating the overthrow of the government.
