Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has stated that he is in the process of finding a successor for U.S. Senator Marco Rubio, who is anticipated to step down on January 20th following his nomination by President-elect Donald Trump for the position of secretary of state.

DeSantis noted that there is strong interest from potential candidates, with a selection likely to be made by early January.

He emphasized the need for a senator who will support Trump’s agenda on immigration and fiscal issues.

DeSantis, who has shifted from being a critic to an ally of Trump, stated he is content in his current role and not seeking a position in the upcoming administration.

“We have already received strong interest from several possible candidates, and we continue to gather names of additional candidates and conduct preliminary vetting. More extensive vetting and candidate interviews will be conducted over the next few weeks, with a selection likely made by the beginning of January,” DeSantis said. “Florida deserves a Senator who will help President Trump deliver on his election mandate, be strong on immigration and border security, take on the entrenched bureaucracy and administrative state, reverse the nation’s fiscal decline, be animated by conservative principles, and has a proven record of results.”
