Perry, a beloved lifeguard and surfer, was pronounced dead by paramedics after being bitten by a shark while serving as a lifeguard near the beach.

“As you can imagine, this is an extremely difficult time for all of us, and I ask for your kindness and your patience as we all just try to get through this next hour and into these next weeks and months,” an agency spokeswoman stated. “Honolulu safety responded via jet ski and brought the surfer here to shore. Honolulu EMS assisted with his death pronouncement.”

His untimely passing has deeply affected the community, with Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi expressing condolences for the loss of the legendary waterman.

“Tamayo Perry was a lifeguard loved by all, he’s well known on the north shore, he’s a professional surfer known worldwide. Tamayo’s personality was infectious and as much as people loved him, he loved everyone else more,” Ocean Safety Department acting Chief Kurt Lager said. “Our condolences go out to Tamayo’s family. We’re asking for some privacy for the family at this time.”

“Bad days are always cancelled when you’re hanging out with this beautiful & wonderful mermaid! I never want you to forget, that I absolutely love & adore you. Thank you for always pulling me out of my box & instigating & sharing so many wild & crazy adventures with me,” Perry wrote online.
