Former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick has received an NFL job offer, but it is not the playing position he desires.
Los Angeles Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh, who previously coached Kaepernick, suggested a coaching role instead, believing Kaepernick would excel in that capacity.
This offer has reportedly been on the table since January, but Kaepernick has not yet responded as he was traveling abroad.
“If that was ever the path he was to take, I think that would be tremendous,” Harbaugh said. “He’d be a tremendous coach, if that’s the path he chose.”
“Yeah, we talked a little bit about it,” Harbaugh said. “He’s considering it. He was out of the country. He said he was going to get back to me.”
“We haven’t reconnected since then. That was early, early in the year.”
“And will we see you play [in the] NFL again?” one interviewer asked him.
“We’re still training, still pushing. So, hopefully, we, uh, just got to get one of these team owners to open up,” Kaepernick said.
While Kaepernick expressed a desire to return to the field as a player, he also acknowledged that coaching could be an avenue where he could contribute significantly to a team.
Kaepernick added, “I mean, it’s something I’ve trained my whole life for, so being able to step back on that field, I think that would be a major moment, a major accomplishment for me. Also, I think it’s something that I could bring a lot to a team and help them win a championship.”
Despite Kaepernick’s controversial past regarding his protests during the national anthem, Harbaugh appears unbothered by potential negative press associated with hiring him.
