Jeff Bezos’ Charity Pours $100 Million Into Fake Meat

via YouTube

The Bezos Earth Fund charity, established by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, is committing $100 million to support the development of alternative protein and fake meat products.

The funds aim to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions from food production, a major contributor globally.

North Carolina State University will receive $30 million over five years to create a research hub for these types of products.

“Food production is the second largest source of greenhouse gas emissions, so it’s critical we find ways to feed a growing population without degrading the planet,” Bezos Earth Fund president and CEO Andrew Steer stated. “Sustainable protein has tremendous potential but more research is needed to reduce the price and boost the flavor and texture to ensure nutritious, affordable products are available. It’s about choice.” (RELATED: Wagyu Burgers, Asian-French Fusion And More: Here’s What’s On The Menu At The UN Climate Confab)

Some technologies the money may develop include plant-based meat substitutes, fermented cell proteins for foods, and lab-grown cultivated meat.

This funding is part of the charity’s $1 billion effort overall to transform food systems and curb emissions.

International organizations like the UN’s FAO have recommended policies to make meat consumption more sustainable and shift diets in wealthier nations.

The funding aims to advance options to feed a growing population sustainably.
