Speculation surrounds the Biden campaign’s response after a concerning debate showcased potential cognitive decline, leading to Democratic concerns about an alternative nominee before the upcoming election.
While switching candidates late poses challenges, the possibility of Vice President Kamala Harris inheriting campaign funds raises discussion.
Despite financial feasibility, Harris faces significant unpopularity among voters, complicating her potential candidacy.
“Biden has two real choices: Kamala inherits; or they transfer it all to the DNC,” Signum Global Advisors partner Rob Casey said.
“That money would all be accessed by Kamala … anyone else would be on their own for fundraising,” he said.
“The tragedy for the Democrats is they were so focused on identity politics they picked someone no one wanted who checks a box,” one anonymous Democratic donor said.
“Had they focused on performance politics they would be in a terrific situation … but I don’t think she can win,” the donor said.
Other figures such as Govs. Gavin Newsom and Gretchen Whitmer have been mentioned, but the timing constraints of starting fundraising anew could give ex-President Trump an advantage.
Biden’s debated performance accentuated communication struggles, prompting further deliberation within the Democratic camp.
