Oliver Darcy, the former writer for CNN’s “Reliable Sources,” has announced his departure to launch a competing subscription-based media newsletter called “Status.”
His exit comes amid a significant restructuring at CNN under new CEO Mark Thompson, who is implementing job cuts following Warner Bros. Discovery’s disappointing financial results.
Darcy, who joined CNN in 2017, has focused on media analysis and its intersection with politics.
“There are no backers. Just me,” Darcy said. “The paid readers will empower my independent voice.”
CNN CEO Mark Thompson stated, “Oliver has established himself as a tough but scrupulously fair leading voice in media reporting and commentary – never afraid to call it as he sees it. He has been a great shepherd of CNN’s Reliable Sources newsletter, and we wish him every success in his new entrepreneurial adventure.”
“Status” aims to provide a unique blend of reporting and commentary on various topics, including technology and politics, operating independently without external backers.
“My pitch to readers is this is a 100 percent independent voice,” Darcy said. “I don’t think there’s one product out there that does exactly what we do.”
The newsletter will offer different membership tiers, and the first issue is set to release on Monday.
Amid these changes, CNN continues to face challenges such as declining viewership and the need to adapt to digital media consumption habits while exploring new revenue streams.
