D.C. Councilmember Trayon White was arrested by the FBI on Sunday, as confirmed by Council Chairman Phil Mendelson, who expressed surprise and is awaiting details regarding the charges and circumstances of the arrest.
White, who has represented Ward 8 since 2016, has faced controversy this year, including a $20,000 fine from the D.C. Office of Campaign Finance and nearly $59,000 owed in public funds from the D.C. Fair Elections Program.
“I’m anxious to get more details to understand what the situation is,” Mendelson said. “You all know as much as I know.”
His campaign finances have been under scrutiny for noncompliance with city regulations, leading to multiple issues over the past election cycles, including an unsuccessful mayoral bid.
An audit indicated that incomplete financial records hindered a thorough examination of his campaign’s financial activities.
“In the absence of a complete list of financial records and documentation necessary to fully conduct the Audit, the Audit Staff cannot exhaustively substantiate the information contained in the Trayon White for Mayor 2022 Reports of Receipts and Expenditures,” an audit of White’s campaign finances states.
