Capitol Riot Prosecutions Stalled as Court Awaits Trump’s Return to the White House

Donald Trump’s possible return to office creates doubts regarding the fate of more than 1,500 federal cases connected to the January 6 Capitol riot.

Despite Trump’s promises to pardon rioters, the Justice Department’s extensive prosecution efforts continue, with many trials and guilty pleas still ongoing.

So far, more than 1,500 individuals have been charged, with around 250 convicted through trials and over 1,000 sentenced, including significant prison terms for leaders of extremist groups.

As Trump has expressed intentions to issue pardons for some rioters, judges have criticized this narrative, emphasizing the seriousness of the events and expressing concern over the implications of such pardons on democracy.
