Tucker Carlson has urged Trump supporters to push their senators to support Rick Scott (R-FL) for Senate leadership. Mitch McConnell (R-KY) scheduled a leadership vote before new senators had been sworn in, sparking controversy.
“What the hell is going on in the US Senate? Hours after Donald Trump wins the most conclusive mandate in 40 years, Mitch McConnell engineers a coup against his agenda by calling early leadership elections in the senate,” Carlson wrote.
“Two of the three candidates hate Trump and what he ran on. One of them, John Cornyn, is an angry liberal whose politics are indistinguishable from Liz Cheney’s. The election is Wednesday, it’s by secret ballot, and it will determine whether or not the new administration succeeds,” Carlson added.
Mitch McConnell, stepping down from Senate leadership, faced criticism for scheduling the vote early. Conservative figures saw this as undermining Trump’s agenda.
Senators Markwayne Mullin (R-OK) and John Thune (R-SD) have advised against presidential interference.
Rick Scott, expected to back the full Trump agenda, received endorsements from conservatives like Tucker Carlson, who had labeled McConnell’s actions a “coup.”
Carlson’s support echoed endorsements from Senators Mike Lee (R-UT) and Rand Paul (R-KY). Senator Josh Hawley (R-MO), a known Trump supporter, faced criticism for reportedly backing Cornyn’s leadership bid.
Critics have accused McConnell of mismanaging campaign funds, affecting Republican outcomes in key states.
Despite President-elect Trump’s influence, McConnell minimized Trump’s role in GOP successes. He instead credited other factors for the party’s performance.
